It's Hard for Some Men to Finish Sentences
Sometimes a man can't say
What he . . . A wind comes
And his doors don't rattle. Rain
Comes and his hair is dry.
There's a lot to keep inside
And a lot to . . . Sometimes shame
Means we. . . Children are cruel,
He's six and his hands. . .
Even Hamlet kept passing
The king praying
And the king said,
"There was something. . . ."
Bly, Robert.
Robert Bly (1926- ) is an American poet, translator, editor, and author who studied at Harvard University and the University of Iowa. He cofounded the magazine Fifties in 1958, which has changed its name over the years to reflect the current decade. This publication has included many important poets, as well as Bly's own translations and poems.
The writer also helped to create the American Writers Against the Vietnam War. When Bly won the 1968 National Book Award, he gave all of his winnings to the Resistance, a draft resisters' organization. Despite his political convictions, Bly is known by the public chiefly for his male-focused book of nonfiction - Iron John. Much of Bly's poetry reflects a serene natural landscape, with simplistic yet highly-symbolic images.
