First of all, I wanted to say that Billy Collins is my favourite male poet, and Emily Dickinson is my favourite female poet. That said..

I'll Tell You How the Sun Rose

I'll tell you how the sun rose,
a ribbon at a time.
The steeples swam in amethyst
the news like squirrels ran.

The hills untied their bonnets,
the bobolinks begun,
and I said softly to myself
'That must have been the sun!'

But how he set I know not;
there seemed a purple stile
which little yellow boys and girls
were climbing all the while

And when they reached the other side,
a dominie in grey,
put gently up the evening bars,
and led the flock away.

Emily Dickinson

That is the first poem I ever learned by heart, and just now typed it off by heart as well. When I read those words "a dominie in grey" I KNEW, at age 10, that poetry was in my blood, my very soul, and that it was shared by someone who had been dead long before I was born. That...is amazing.

So, anyway, hi! *wave* I'm glad to meet you all. I'm just your regular run-of-the-mill starving artist/writer. *grin* I also maintain a poetry community for those of you who write your own work as well as love other poets. It's called [livejournal.com profile] freed_verses, and it's brand new, just starting up, so come check it out! A word of warning though, it's not for half-hearted poets! :)

Thanks for this excellent community..you'll all be seeing quite a bit of Billy and Emily from me lol. :)
