SUMMER RAIN

She comes and goes, like summer rain.
I wait all day for summer rain.
And when she comes, I smile again.
She cools my brain, like summer rain.

I lift my head and taste again.
The sweet, sweet drops of summer rain.

She's warm, she's fresh like summer rain.

Paul Kelly is a musician from Melbourne since the 1970s, and he is reknowned in this country. A great songwriter, and therefore poet...his lyrics are now studied by our year 12 students as part of their English assessment.

Well, there are many MANY people who'd disagree with you on that point.... but aside from that, this community only allows material by published poets, not musicians. In the future, please limit your posts to poems, not song lyrics.

Perhaps that definition should be on the profile page of the community, along with no self-publishing?

I think there are many very old poems that would be considered songs if they were released now, but the music has been lost.

I see Paul Kelly as much a poet as a musician, but I might be biased as I'm a musician and a poet and would hate to see my work limited to one or the other. ()

I have to agree with you there...and many songwriters write poetry that is then turned into songs, often by themselves but many times by other musicians. Plenty of old Australian poems (AB 'Banjo' Paterson and Henry Lawson, just to name a couple) have been "songified" over the years.

...and even without the music, Summer Rain is a beautiful poem.
