By: Jewel "a night without armor"

It was the way
my thigh felt against
the cool car hood
that made me
like you so

And it was the way
a risk can run down
a spine that made
my blood race
as a few bleary eyes
stumbled to their cars
unaware

And it was the way
you took me with such
strength and stretched
me between the
moon and a Chevrolet
that made me
crave you so

Unfortunatly because she has a poetry book out I have to let this post stay but ug. I think Jewel is an awful writer.

Argh, why? The community's called "greatpoets" not "anyone rich or famous enough to publish tripe and call it poetry"!!

Nor is this the first time Jewel has been posted in this community.

Well it's who we see as GreatPoets (not including ourselves) but the person who posted this is entitled to their opinion and if they think that Jewel is a Greatpoet that's their right. Everyone would stop posting if I just deleted all the poems I didn't like.

I was wondering when Jewel became a "great poet".

or a poet at all.

I must say that I do like her poetry, despite what everyone else seems to think. :-P

She has a way with imagery that makes you see what's happening. I like that, though whether it's "great poetry" or not may be debatable.

:-D

If those "few bleary eyes" which "stumbled to their cars" in this verse had read a bit of Jewel, they might have learned how to see where they were going. Too bad they were "unaware".

like this brilliant imagery: "stretched me between the moon and a Chevrolet"?

next time, post from Beau Sia's spoof of Jewel (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0966204298/qid=1068165794//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl14/002-4526819-2728000?v=glance&s=books&n=507846). That's great poetry. :)

I am guilty of having posted Jewel's poems in here.
I think that her poetry is just as great as some of
others. I don't think she should be looked down upon
simply because she achieved success through her music.
I have that collection of poetry and find much of it good.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinons.

Indeed, everyone is entitled to his own opinion--which is why these people should feel as free to groan about Jewel's piece as you feel free to defend it.

I think this is crap. Her grammar is terrible, which could be forgivable if it didn't lead to atrocities like this:

And it was the way
a risk can run down
a spine that made
my blood race
as a few bleary eyes
stumbled to their cars
unaware

Bleary eyes do not stumble to their cars, aware or unaware.

Her grammar is one of my biggest problems with her even in her song lyrics where it doesn't matter as much because songs sometimes have different rules.

I don't look down on her because of her having music success. There are maybe one or two of her songs that I do actually like. But I don't think that she's a great talent. Her poetry is average and mediocre at best and if she had not been a big success musically she would not have been a published poet.

She's every bit as great as Rod McKuen.

Jewel is not a poet. If she wasn't already famous for plastering the radio with derivative superficial pop, no publisher would have looked twice at the simple minded drivel she pawns off as poems. The caliber of her poetry falls far short of the cheesiest high school poetry magazine. I will never get sick of watching the famous MTV news clip where Kurt Loder rails into her for her horrible grammer and incompetence with language, where he asked her in astonishment why she didn't at least get a decent editor to keep her from showcasing to the entire nation her sad lack of intelligence.

Interesting that Jewel has managed to spark more conversation about what is poetry than the poems by the canonized "great poets". Thanks dragon_flies for the controversial post! :)
