Second Thoughts in Columbus, Ohio
I find it strange that we search
our whole lives for love
as thought it were
the final treasure
the solemn purpose of people
in movies and magazines.
Yet when it comes to your door
one morning with calm eyes to deliver itself
you realize that alone it is not enough

You are before me, sweet man,
and I am thinking
Aren't I suppose to give up
everything?
Aren't I suppose to be brave
and abandon
each dream and aspiration
and yield utterly to this
elusive beast love
to your soft belly and companionship?

Aren't we suppose to
have a piece of land-and children-!
that look like you and cook
soup and bread and sing
each other songs before sleep
and absentmindedly count the stars
from our front porch as we pray
for each other's keep
and pretend
forever is a word known
not only known to the heart?

I have the book in which this poem is posted..
I love her work..always have, always will.
I think she is very intimate and person, it's beautiful.
She gives a lot of heart to the poetical female voice.

I usually never make negative comments about the poems others post here, but I cringed when I saw this "poet" included here, and I laugh to myself whenever I see her book in for sale in second-hand bookstores (one I often go to has about 20 copies and won't take any more). When you learn what it takes to get a book of poems published (years o fhard work and getting one or two poems at a time published in little magazines), you will realize that this rock star published a book of poems because she's a rock star, not because of the merits of her "poetry."

But to each his or her own, I suppose.

Well she wrote these over the years. She wrote most of these before she knew fame.
I agree she had the money and the fame to get these published, but I happen to think her poetry is still very good.
